Apply This Technique for Mental Clarity

When our minds are occupied with an overload of thoughts, we lose clarity and cannot perform mentally at our best. We need to refresh our minds as soon as possible and restore them to an optimal working state. There is a simple practice you can use to achieve mental clarity and freshness. I’ve been using this technique for a while, and it has proven highly effective in helping me feel mentally refreshed and energized.

This practice is done by closing your eyes and ears, then turning your attention inward—especially to your breathing. The key point here is to isolate your brain from external stimuli. By covering your ears with your hands, you temporarily disconnect from the outside world and spend a few moments fully tuned into your inner voice—the familiar sound of your inner world that you have known since birth. As you do this, you focus on your breath. This creates a sense of mental renewal and clarity comparable to the refreshment you feel after a good sleep.

The secret lies in temporarily shutting down the two main gateways through which your mind consumes mental energy: your eyes and your ears. When you cut off their connection to the outside world, you effectively insulate your mind from external stimuli.

Blocking external sounds by covering your ears makes a particularly powerful difference. The sound you hear when your ears are closed is your inner sound—the rhythm of your own bodily systems. This is the sound you were familiar with in the womb. Listening to it creates a deep sense of safety and calm. In the rush of everyday life, it is almost impossible to hear this sound.

With your eyes and ears closed, focus on your inner sound and your breath. Spend a short while simply listening to your breathing. You will notice how shallow your breaths usually are. By intentionally breathing deeper and longer with each breath, you can amplify the effect of this practice. At this point, thoughts will naturally fade away. This is where mental transformation begins.

After practicing this for a while, when you open your eyes and ears again, you will notice that you’ve shifted into a different mental state. Throughout the day, your mind is constantly occupied with thoughts and external stimuli. The clarity you experience afterward is similar to restarting a computer—it feels refreshed, faster, and clearer. In a sense, you will have turned your brain off and back on again.
