That Cunning Subconscious!
While at one level of our consciousness we are working diligently towards our desired goal, at another level we may be able to resist our own efforts.
A friend of mine was in Pakistan during the Indo-Pakistani war. When Indian planes bombarded the highways, the bus he was traveling on had to take winding roads. At one point in the journey, the bus got stuck in a riverbed. The driver asked the passengers to get down and push the bus.
After fifteen minutes of struggle, the bus did not move an inch, and the driver got off the bus in surprise to understand what had happened.
He was astonished to see that half of the passengers were pushing the bus from behind because he had requested it. But the rest of the passengers were trying to push the bus from front to back, equally vigorously.
