Take a careful look at the periods in your life where we have improved the most. What you'll usually notice is that there are times when you're in trouble, feeling helpless, or encountering problems. Now you know that you have become much stronger than before those problems. Perhaps you are going through such a period again. Lift your head and try to look a little further.
You will see your future self coming out of this period stronger. The truth is, the only helping hand you can find in difficult times is often your other hand. As Mustafa Kemal Atatürk said: If one day you are helpless, do not wait for a savior. Be the savior yourself.
The risk of standing still is many times greater than the risk of taking action. And sometimes you may even have to pay for such decisions with your life.
Movie Analysis: Alive
Adapted from a real life story, the 1993 movie "Alive" (To Live) is about the survival struggle of Uruguayan athletes who survived a plane crash.
The tragic event that forms the subject of the film took place in 1972. The plane carrying the athletes crashes into the Andes. Survivors wait a long time for search teams to find them. Struggling with severe cold and hunger, the survivors even have to eat their friends who died in the accident in order to survive during their days of waiting.
Here is a scene in this movie that offers an idea of how important our point of view is. Two months after the accident, the captain of the team fell into despair when he learned from the radio that the call was stopped and the help they expected would never come. While thinking about how to tell the others this news, his teammate, who can see the situation from a different angle, has a completely different idea:
- The good news is they stopped the calls.
– What good is this news?
Because now we have to get out of here on our own. We will save ourselves!
Upon this conversation, a few of them embark on a grueling 10-day journey to find help. Eventually, they manage to find help by crossing the Andes and rescue the survivors. If they hadn't taken action, they wouldn't have had a chance.
We have to make such difficult decisions throughout our lives. Most of the time, we wait in desperation for someone to help us, hoping to save us from our problems.
What if we could stop waiting and take action?
The answer is simple: What would not happen? Maybe our life would have been saved!
As the Norwegians say:
When you are helpless, Think like ATATÜRK!
