You condemn yourself to not receive praise forever; because nothing you do can live up to your exaggerated expectations. The technical name for this perceptual fallacy is polar thinking. You see everything in black and white and there are no grays.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong> Overgeneralization:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #808000;\">You conclude that if something happens to you, it will happen again and again. You feel sad because things are always unpleasant. A depressed salesman saw bird droppings on his car window and said, \u201cThis is my luck. Birds always find my glass,\u201d he said. When I questioned the past, he did not remember that he had pooped a bird on his window during his twenty-year travels. The pain of rejection almost always comes from overgeneralizing. A confrontation with the facts without overgeneralizing, while temporarily disappointing, does not cause serious discomfort.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Mental Filter:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #808000;\">It is the perception of the whole event as negative by focusing on a negative detail in an event. When you&#039;re depressed, it&#039;s like wearing glasses that filter out everything positive. Anything that clings to your consciousness is negative. Because you are not aware of this &quot;mental filter&quot;, you decide that everything is negative. The technical name for this process is \u201cselective focusing\u201d. It is a bad habit that leads you to unnecessary pain.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Overriding the Positive:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #808000;\">Overriding the positive is the most destructive type of cognitive distortion. You are like the scientist seeking scientific support for his simple hypothesis. The hypothesis that dominates your depressive thoughts is usually of the &quot;I&#039;m second class&quot; type. When you have a negative experience, \u201cHere; this proves what I have always thought\u201d. Conversely, a positive event is, \u201cIt was a coincidence. You say, &quot;It doesn&#039;t count.&quot; The price you pay for this inclination is intense pain and ignorance of the good things that happen.
