Martin Luther King Jr. Kimdir?

Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968) Amerikalı din adamı, aktivist ve sivil haklar lideridir. 15 Ocak 1929’da Atlanta, Georgia’da doğan King, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri’nde ırk ayrımcılığına ve eşitsizliğe karşı yürütülen sivil haklar hareketinin en önemli liderlerinden biri oldu. Şiddetsiz direniş anlayışını benimseyerek toplumsal değişim için barışçıl mücadeleyi savundu. 1963’te yaptığı ve “I Have a Dream” adıyla tanınan konuşması, Amerikan tarihinin en etkili hitabet örneklerinden biri kabul edilir. 1964 yılında Nobel Barış Ödülü’ne layık görülen King, 4 Nisan 1968’de Memphis, Tennessee’de uğradığı suikast sonucu hayatını kaybetti. Ardında eşitlik, adalet, özgürlük ve insan onuruna ilişkin güçlü bir miras bıraktı.
